From stocks to credit score to real estate, financial jargon comes as an unfortunate shock to too many adolescents entering adulthood. What makes a good credit score? What are the differences between stocks and bonds? What is a fixed vs. variable rate mortgage? Considering today’s dynamic economic environment, financial literacy has become absolutely crucial for teens and pre-teens in order to tackle their future personal finance with confidence and precision. This six-week course aims to demystify such financial principles and equip young learners with the necessary tools to navigate all fundamental financial obstacles. Specifically, students will delve into earning income to better understand the nuances of salaries, wages, and passive income as well as consider how taxes, interest rates, and inflation may impact such earnings. Moreover, they will explore various investment opportunities, including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. However, extending beyond these initial concepts, students will have an opportunity to practice budgeting, building credit, real estate, taxes, and more! Overall, the goal of this course is to enhance teens’ and pre-teens' financial literacy, a knowledge that will foster empathetic and informed citizens, voters, and future leaders.
For students also enrolled in Tuesday morning Debate or Model UN classes, there will be supervised social time from when these classes end at 9:30 until the 10 AM start of this class. If they prefer, students taking both classes are free to take a break and come back at 10:00 am.
Future Financiers: The Ins and Outs of Personal Finance
Elite Competition
No matter your starting point, Westfield will help you meet and exceed your competitive goals. Graduates of our programs regularly compete and excel both within the US and beyond it. Check out our stellar record of competitive success.
Expert Instructors
Our summer program instructors are competitors from elite US college teams, former high school champions and coaches with years of experience. Students get plenty of individual instruction and feedback, learning how to advocate from the best of the best.
Real Learning
At Westfield, learning is always our top priority. Debaters learn how to make persuasive arguments about topics that run the gamut from moral philosophy to pop culture. And everyone has fun!
The skills of debate—including critical thinking, confident public speaking and the ability to engage with nuanced global issues—are exactly the same skills necessary to shine later in life. Whether in a college seminar, an internship cohort or just a late-night discussion with friends, debaters are ready to rise to the occasion. It’s no coincidence that our graduates often find themselves getting into their first-choice schools. (Think Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Williams and more.) But the value of finding your voice goes far beyond that:
