Community Events
When you sign up for Westfield, you’re joining a community that actively curates exciting, intellectually challenging events for our students and their families. Some of these events are specifically put on by and for our own community; others are run by organizations in our network. This is education beyond the bounds of the classroom and learning delivered in the context of the world.
Some typical Westfield events and opportunities
The Connecticut Forum
Westfield is able to provide free tickets for students to this essential Hartford event. In previous years, students have gotten the chance to see Michelle Obama, Gloria Steinem and Malcolm Gladwell in live conversation.
Guest Speakers
During summer camp, Westfield invites speakers from the community to come speak to students. Past speakers have included CT congressmen, bestselling authors, and the head of Yale Medicine’s Pediatric Genomics Discovery Program.
World Affairs Council of CT
Westfield regularly organizes outings to attend WAC events, including discussions designed for specifically for students to discuss globally relevant current events in addition to larger public conversations. The 2019 forum—focused on the Middle East—included US military leadership as well as ambassadors from Afghanistan and Iraq.
TEDx & Intelligence²
We’re constantly on the look out for interesting opportunities we can share with our community. Sometimes that means one-off events, like the TEDxPlaceDesNations phenomenon we live-streamed in 2016 and the public debate about free speech hosted by Intelligence Squared we attended on Yale’s campus later that year.
Courageous Conversations
This year, Westfield plans to put on a series of conversations for our community—both students and parents—to discuss pressing and vital issues in a virtual town hall setting. The first conversation will focus issues surrounding racial justice. Stay tuned for more information about this upcoming event!
